7-spot Ladybird on a mild winter’s day

This 7-spot Ladybird (Coccinella 7-punctata) was photographed on a mild winter’s day in February 2019. It was found on the trunk of a tree on the edge of the Village Green.

One might not think of these insects as likely to be found in winter, but on mild, sunny days they will sometimes emerge from the more sheltered spots (such as in leaf litter and underneath loose bark) where they spend much of the winter.

Many other British insect species pass the winter in the egg or larva stage and so their adults cannot be found at all until the spring or even the summer.
