In the Park

Highfield Park is a rural park and has something for everybody to enjoy within its 82-acres.

There are two formal walking trails to be enjoyed.

  • Tree Trail – Explore the beautiful arboretum in Highfield Park.
  • History Trail – Learn about the history of the area and the legacy of Cell Barnes and Hill End hospitals.

Alternatively, you may just want a less formal stroll through our woodlands or meadows. The Trust strives to maintain a high quality natural environment that encourages an increase in biodiversity and it is great to see an increase in species in the park.

  • Bats
  • Birds
  • Butterflies
  • Fungi
  • Wildflowers

The Village Green is the perfect location to enjoy a picnic and the Natural Play Area is great for the kids. Petanque can also be played on the pistes in the Mediterranean Garden. Equipment can be borrowed from the Visitor Centre, Monday to Fridays. Toilets are available at the Visitor Centre.

Ab Salute Gym is situated in the park and offers day passes to this very impressive facility. It also boast a modern 3G 7-aside pitch in the multi-use games area for kickabouts and a state-of-the-art golf simulator. Call in for a coffee and to use the toilet facilities.

Trestle Arts Base provides a range of cultural experiences and also houses the Fade To Black café. Call in for something to eat and to use the toilet facilities.

Several sports and leisure clubs use the park.

  • We are the largest venue used by St. Albans City Youth Football Club.
  • Hertfordshire Health Walks run a programme of walks every week.
  • Elswood Bowmen are an archery club based in the park.
  • We are home to two petanque clubs.

The Trust organises a high quality programme of events that run throughout the year. Some of the events we run ourselves, but others are run by third-parties.
