Highfield Helpers have enhanced the work of the Trust over many years already and provide much needed support to the grounds staff in keeping the park in tip-top condition. They undertake all kinds of activity in the 82-acres that the park now extends to. There is always something else that needs doing!
The volunteers are young and old alike and come from all walks of life. We’ve had graduates, job seekers, retired residents, bored residents and people with learning difficulties. We appreciate the support from wherever it comes; there really is a job for everyone. It’s good fun and keeps you fit. No expensive gym fees here!
They meet at the Visitor Centre, every Tuesday, at 9.30am. Volunteers can stay for as long as they wish, although the day will end at 4pm. If you plan to stay all day, please bring a packed lunch with you, although the Trust will provide tea, coffee and biscuits throughout the day. Appropriate, comfortable clothing should be worn with sturdy footwear.
There is no such thing as a standard day, as the type of work varies with the seasons. But typical tasks our volunteers undertake include the general improvement of the woodland paths, clearing of brambles throughout the park, maintenance of borders and other gardening related activities, hedge cutting, and litter picking and tidying up. They are particularly busy in the orchards when the of apples need harvesting, but they all do a tremendous job throughout the year and provide a vital role in the upkeep of our fabulous park.
So, if you are at loose end on Tuesdays, please do consider getting involved. It’s a great way to help with the upkeep of the park, help the environment, get to meet new people and support a charity all in one go. No experience is needed.
