Bat Safari
Our Bat Nights are very popular events, so please book early to avoid disappointment.
The evening will start with a twenty minute talk on this much maligned mammal. Attendees will learn about bat history, folklore and how they live their lives. You will be briefed on the the types of bat to be found in the park, the UK and across the world. You will also learn how to use your bat detector in order to identify the bats that call Highfield home. Some bats fly high in the sky while others fly low over water, some prefer grassland while others stick close to hedges and trees.
We are more likely to see bats around sunset or sunrise in warm, dry weather, so please keep your fingers crossed for nice weather on the day of your event. Past events have occurred during wet weather, which has limited, but not stopped sightings.
Event timing is therefore aligned to the sunset and will change throughout the summer. For more information on timings and dates, please look at the park calendar. The event is suitable for young and old alike, but please wear suitable clothing and sturdy footwear.
We know from past events that Pipistrelle Bats (Pipistrellus pipistrellus) and Noctule Bats (Nyctalus noctula) live in the park.
The event is run from the Visitor Centre, which has a large, free car park for attendees to use.
The car park grid reference: TL17160611.

Travelling by road
Visitors from outside the area are most likely to approach the Park from the M25 motorway. Exit via Junction 22 (London Colney exit) and follow the signs for St Albans along the A1081 to the A414 roundabout. Continue to follow the A1081 signs into St Albans and at the next roundabout turn right into Highfield Park Drive. Continue straight on at the next roundabout (note the “Welcome to Highfield Park” sign), the road then bears to the left and becomes Highfield Lane. For the Highfield Park Visitor Centre turn left at the next mini roundabout on to Hill End Lane. The entrance to the park is on the left (wooden field gate and signage) opposite the end of Frobisher Road. Follow the road round into the car park.
