Velvet Shank

The velvet shank (also known as the winter mushroom) often grows in dense, clustered groups on the dead or decaying wood of broadleaf trees, particularly favourites like elm, ash, beech, and oak. Its striking bright orange caps stand out vividly against winter landscapes, and it’s one of the few mushrooms you’ll reliably spot throughout the colder months.
