HAA Design Award 2019
The HAA HERTFORDSHIRE ASSOCIATION OF ARCHITECTS Annual Awards scheme is designed to encourage good design and construction within Hertfordshire and to raise awareness of RIBA Members and practices in all fields, including new build, sustainability, refurbishment and conservation.
We are very pleased that in 2019 the Highfield Park Trust Visitor Centre won the Civic and Community category.
This was the write up by Ian Latham, Editor of Architecture Day magazine:
“Roger Mears Architects – Highfield Park Visitor Centre
This ingeniously planned new visitor centre supports the expanding activities of the Highfield Park Trust, set up to oversee an area of parkland and sports facilities that came into being in 1996 after the closure of two hospitals. What impressed us most about the building is how such a modest structure, which appears entirely appropriate, almost unassuming in its setting, can serve such a range of activities, from office space and storage to toilets and a central multi-purpose space for meetings, exhibitions and classes. Everything is made to work hard, with nothing wasted or unnecessary – and with impressive sustainability credentials. In this respect, it was significant that the off-grid location meant that an air-source heat pump became the optimum solution for providing heating. All-in-all a very cleverly designed building, with no hint of the architectural indulgence that often characterises this building type, and an exemplary demonstration of what can be achieved by prioritising what’s important.”
