Latin/Botanical Name: Koelreuteria paniculata
Range: Native to Northern China, Japan and Korea
Height: up to 10m
Uses: Ornamental, planted in all temperate regions of the world
Description: A deciduous tree with a broad, dome-shaped crown. The leaves, which appear late in spring and fall early in autumn, have 7-15 leaflets, with a deeply serrated margin. The flowers are yellow, with four petals, growing in large panicles. The fruit is a three-parted lantern shaped pod which ripens to pink in autumn, containing several dark brown to black seeds.
Interesting fact: In Chinese history, Koelreuteria paniculata was one of the five official trees which could be planted as a memorial by a tomb.
